Minimum Wages

I’m shocked to read that The National Minimum Wage (NMW) was only introduced in 1999!! in the U.K and that there is a number of employers are being penalised for still not complying with the legislation every year.

The current standard rate of the NMW is £5.05 per hour. The current rate for employees between 18 and 21 years old is £4.25 per hour,
16 and 17 year olds must be paid a legal minimum wage which is £3 per hour (I still can’t believe this is true). Workers of 22 years and over can be paid the minimum of £ 4.25 per hour for the first six months of a new job for a new employer if they are receiving training courses where the training in institutions receiving government support. In addition, there is a fair piece rate which means that employers must pay their output workers the minimum wage for every hour they work based on an hourly rate derived from the time it takes a worker working at average speed to produce the work in question. This is shocking. How do people on a minimum wage of £5,05 per hour survive in a city like London?

The amount of cash one has, is (apparently) directly related to health and lifeexpectations. According to some researches, people on low wages suffer more illnesses and die sooner than those in the professions. Some statistics show that low paid workers in the E.U can expect to die on average 9.5 years younger than professional workers. This gap has increased by 5 years in the last few decades.

It is sad to read the arguments from these so called "Captains of Industry". They are the first to defend the privileges of board members such as to fat-cat salaries, bonuses and excessive pension arrangments. In the same time, they're the first to attack policies that are put in place to defend the rights of those who bring in the cash for those fat cats.

salam,
WELCOME BAAACK !!

now, on to the minimum wage .. thing is, im not sure what their work times are in the UK (dont ask what ive been doing for the past 8 months hah),, 9 to 5, 1 hr break? 7 hr days?

if so, and even assuming THIRTY days a month, the 5.05 would come to 1060 quid for an adult

for one person, yes.. i can "see" him just scrapping by
for anything else, im not sure

however fact of the matter is: that is the MIN. wage.. surely, any 'skilled' job would pay higher

i dunno man .. i just cant get my head to it becoz its diff.

anyway, good to have u back!

Hala habibi,

Thanks for stopping by and for welcoming me back man! I only realized few days how much I missed blogging.

As for the NMW, I agree with you that a skilled positions pay higher than the NMW, fortunately.

Assuming that a single person on NMW works 30 days a month, a salary of 1060 pounds minimum sounds enough. But in reality, after deducting the income taxes & council taxes (plus other deductions?) this 1060 would be reduced to 650-700 (assuming the lowest income tax rate is being paid). Then, this person should pay his rent, pay for transport, pay for other bills (telephone etc) and pay for food.

Now, I think that the rent prices are much lower in other UK parts. In London (apparently world city number one when it comes to rent prices) someone with such a low wage will definitely face troubles finding affordable housing.

Of course it's a good thing that a NMW exists. But, I believe that the rate has no connection to reality at all! Especially when you consider that the lowest tax rate is currently at nearly 30% of the annual income (everyone has apparently a tax-free allowance, 4 thousands something, anything above it's minimum 30% tax charge for everyone). That's just ridiculous. Fairer would be to exempt them or at at lease offer them a lower rate.

Anyways, enough about NMW (God be with those on it),
I read your powerful post on Zainab Bnt ‘Ali few days ago. I was so fascinated by it that I kept on reading it over and over again. I even memorized her speech to the inhabitants of Kofa. I was speechless.
Tem: I know what you’ve doin' the last 8 months: you were rocking blogland ☺

Welcome back.. u were missed! :)

I was just watching this same issue discussed on tv the other day.. and yes, like u added in the above comment, as if the NMW isn't low as is, taxes come in and make it even lower. The show i watched showed families LIVING off this and how parents literally have to work 2 jobs at times just to make ends meet.. and if kids are involved, the kids get lost in the shuffle as their parents are so busy trying to make money, they don't have enough time to spend with their families...

It's very sad and it really is a wake up call.. we should be thankful for what we have instead of complaining about silly things.. so many people don't even have the bare minimum which we take for granted!

I think I saw that program too. Was it about the Minimum wages in Midwest, USA? Apparently, the minimum wages are even much lower than in Western Europe….

You know, they seem "trapped" in a cycle that could last for generations. Exactly, kids get lost in between and end up having low educational levels, if any. And the kids themselves will end up earning NMW and the cycle is round.

I am still shocked by this! And it's frustrating that there isn't much we can do, as it appears that the global economy is highly dependant on low-paid workers.

Alf Alhamdullilah for all what we have!
